The Zions Premium Interest Checking Account delivers a tiered interest rate of 0.12% up to 0.30% across all your Zions account balances, including checking, savings, money market and CDs.
Zions waives the monthly fee when you have a combined deposit of $10,000 or a combined deposit and consumer loan balance of $25,000, which means if you hold a mortgage, car loan or credit card with Zions, you can enjoy free premium checking that also earns interest every month. The Premium Interest Checking Account also offers other perks, such as ATM fee rebates, free checks and overdraft transfers with no fee.
Research Methodology
To determine rankings, GOBankingRates looked at the following factors from the most premier/costly checking product from the top 25 banks (in terms of total assets): (1) total assets as sourced from the FDIC; (2) minimum deposit to open an account; (3) monthly checking fee ratio (percent the minimum to avoid fee compared to the monthly fee itself); (4) APY on the checking account; and (5) associated and advertised benefits/perks from these premium products. All factors were then scored and combined, with the lowest score being the best. Factor (1) and (2) weighed 0.5 times, and factor (5) weighed 3 times. All products and offerings had to be available as of Nov. 8, 2023, to be considered. All data is up to date as of Oct. 1, 2024, rates and fees are subject to change.
What Is a Premium Checking Account?
Compared to a standard checking account, which generally does not earn much interest and is used on a basic, everyday level for spending purposes, a premium checking account offers banking customers exclusive perks as a reward for meeting high balance requirements.
Some of these benefits may include higher interest rates, free checks, lower fees for financial products available through the same financial institution and more.
Pros and Cons of Premium Checking Accounts
Let’s review a few pros and cons associated with premium checking accounts.
Pros
- Higher interest rates
- Lower, or waived, fees for other financial products offered at the same financial institution
- Higher transaction limits
- Free checks
- ATM fee reimbursements
- Personalized customer service
Cons
- High minimum balance requirements on qualifying linked accounts. You must maintain a higher minimum account balance to qualify for access to a premium checking account. Often, this amount is at least $15,000. Depending on the financial institution, the balance requirement may potentially be even higher than this amount.
- Benefits may also be connected to your account balance. Many banking customers may receive greater benefits the higher their balance is.
How To Qualify for a Premium Checking Account
Eligibility for a premium checking account will depend on the financial institution where you do your banking. Banking customers need a combined balance of at least $10,000 in any of their linked accounts at the bank to be eligible for a premium checking account. In some cases, you may need to show proof of meeting these requirements over several months.
Additionally, the financial institution you bank with may require you to submit a formal application. Conduct your due diligence to find out what your financial institution requires from those interested in qualifying for a premium checking account.
Are Premium Checking Accounts Worth It?
The answer to this question will depend on your financial needs and unique circumstances. It also depends on whether you find the exclusive perks offered by having a premium checking account to be an essential aspect of your banking experience.
